Meridian Police Department Increases Patrol During Holiday Season
Meridian- With the holidays in full swing, the Meridian Police Department will once again be participating in the statewide effort to remove DUI drivers from Idaho roadways by increasing patrols within the city. During a time when many celebrations include alcohol, the Meridian Police would like to remind residents to celebrate with a plan.

In 2022, the Meridian Police Department dealt with more than 500 cases of drunk driving. This increased enforcement comes at a time when traffic fatalities throughout Idaho have reached an all-time high, according to the Idaho Transportation Department Office of Highway Safety.

Starting December 15th until the New Year's Eve weekend, the Meridian Police Department is increasing efforts to curb DUI-related incidents. The goal is to provide educational resources and enforce laws to ensure the safety of families during the holiday season. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
  • Before you begin your celebrations, arrange for a safe ride home. Designate a non-drinking friend as your driver for the day.
  • If you know someone who has been drinking, do not let them drive. Offer to help them find a sober ride home or take their keys to prevent them from getting behind the wheel.
  • Do not drive while under the influence of alcohol. Instead, call a taxi, a ride share service, or a sober friend to take you home.
  • If you are hosting a party, ensure that your guests leave with a sober driver.
  • Always wear your seat belt as it is the best protection against impaired drivers on the road.
If you happen to see an impaired driver on the road, do not hesitate to contact local law enforcement. Your actions may help save someone's life. Let's work together to ensure a safe and happy holiday season for everyone.

Traffic Sergeant Tara Smith emphasizes the importance of responsible drinking by highlighting the availability of ride share options. “Instead of driving under the influence, individuals should plan ahead for a safe ride home. By doing so, they not only protect themselves but also others on the road.”

Funding for extra DUI patrols is provided by a grant from the Idaho Transportation Department Office of Highway Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
