On Sunday, December 17, 2023, at approximately 12:57 a.m., officers from the Petaluma Police Department were dispatched to the 200 block of N Water Street on report of a collision involving a vehicle into a fire hydrant. The involved vehicle, a gray Dodge Challenger, had reportedly fled the scene.
Officers arrived on scene and observed the broken hydrant with water spraying into the air. The reporting party directed officers to a Dodge Challenger parked down the road with damage consistent with the collision. The driver reportedly fled the area on foot and a description was obtained.
Officers located a subject matching the description of the driver, walking in the 800 block of Petaluma Blvd N. The driver was identified as Kelvin Kelsey. Kelsey had objective signs of alcohol intoxication and showed impairment while performing field sobriety tests. At the conclusion of a DUI investigation, the investigating officer determined Kelsey was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision and placed him under arrest. Kelsey was additionally charged with hit and run vehicle collision and booked at the Sonoma County Jail on the listed charges.
The Petaluma Police Department has been committed to increasing traffic safety, especially reducing the number of alcohol-related collisions. Petaluma Police advise motorist to plan ahead if you’re going to go out and drink alcohol, designate a sober driver or share a ride. Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
