Cranford OEM December 17th – 18th Coastal Storm Message

A Flood Watch is in effect until 5:00pm Tomorrow, December 18th. A Coastal Storm system will impact our area from later this afternoon into the day tomorrow. A widespread 2 to 4 inches of rain, along with gusty winds, particularly in the early morning hours tomorrow, are expected. This storm has the potential to cause flood conditions along the main river channel and the associated brooks (Casino, Orchard, College, etc). Flash flooding is also a possibility, but is expected to be more localized in nature at this time. The most likely time for flood impacts will be midnight tonight into tomorrow's day. The river level will likely crest several hours after the rainfall ends into tomorrow afternoon. Advisory-level winds are expected in more coastal areas and eastern parts of the metro area, but periods of gusty winds early tomorrow morning should be expected.

What residents should do:
Residents in flood-prone areas should take common sense precautions and monitor conditions if flooding materializes. Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, as the National Weather Service will issue Flood Warnings if conditions materialize. NWS warnings impacting Cranford will be automatically re-broadcast on Nixle. Residents can get the most up-to-date weather information by visiting www.weather.gov.

If the 3 to 4 inches of rainfall totals materialize over the Union County or up-basin area in eastern Essex County, minor river flooding would be likely. Moderate flooding is possible where the highest rainfall totals fall. The most likely time for this will be during early morning hours tomorrow. In the event of flash flooding or roadway flooding, please do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Just six inches of water is enough to disable a vehicle and cause life-threatening conditions..

If you live in a flood prone location, monitor weather conditions and have a plan in the event that flood warnings are issued.

Residents throughout the Township are asked to assist by clearing storm drains of leaves or other debris near their homes. Residents should also secure outdoor holiday decorations in anticipation of gusty conditions.

The Township has taken precautions, including opening river gates and deploying pumps, and has implemented storm response procedures within the public safety and public works departments. With some common sense preparedness measures, we can protect ourselves and our families.

Again, residents should remain weather aware over the next 24 hours, and if you live in a flood zone, have a plan in place in case the higher-end rainfall impacts our area.
