This is an updated message from the Fairfield Office of Emergency Management regarding current and potential flood conditions.

The Township of Fairfield is still in a local state of emergency. Thankfully, the Passaic River crested at 21.52’ today at approximately 8:30 AM at a level less than what was initially anticipated. The most recent predictions using the Pinebrook River gauge indicate that the river will begin to drop from a major flood level stage to a moderate flood level stage on or about Thursday December 21st at approximately 7 AM. While water will continue to recede, the public can still expect some roadways to remain flooded and/or impassable.

As of this report, the following major roadways remain closed:

  • Bloomfield Avenue
  • Horseneck Road from Hollywood Avenue to the Montville Town Line
  • Two Bridges Road into Lincoln Park
  • Little Falls Road near Pier Lane and Carlos Drive

Route 46 Eastbound remains closed at the West Essex Diner. Motorists who need to go east should use Route 80 or find an alternate route.

It is important that residents who have water in their basements and who also have water surrounding their homes at the same time, resist the idea of pumping out their basement until the water surrounding their home recedes.

The next phase of this flood emergency relates to damage assessment and clean up. The Office of Emergency Management will provide further guidance relating to this activity beginning tomorrow. We do encourage anyone with damaged property to document it with photographs to help with personal flood insurance claims.

For more information relating to this flood emergency or to see a list of all affected roadways, citizens can go to the Township of Fairfield’s website at www.Fairfieldnj.org. You can also call the Township’s flood hotline at (201) 522-9267 to speak live with an officer.  This phone will remain available throughout this emergency.
