INCIDENT: Vehicle vs Bicyclist Fatal Traffic Crash
LOCATION: Navajo Road and Ottowa Road, Apple Valley, CA
PEDESTRIAN: Gerald Duncan (66), resident of Apple Valley
DRIVER 2: Richard Ortiz (31), resident of Apple Valley
VEHICLE: White 2016 Chevrolet Colorado
SUMMARY:
On Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at approximately 5:48 PM, deputies from the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station and rescue personnel from the Apple Valley Fire Protection District and American Medical Response responded to a vehicle versus bicyclist traffic collision that occurred on Navajo Road and Ottawa Road, in the Town of Apple Valley.
Through investigation, deputies determined a white Chevrolet Colorado was traveling in the southbound #1 lane of Navajo Road approaching Ottawa Road. A pedestrian was riding his bicycle west across Navajo Road wearing dark clothing and was struck by the vehicle.
The pedestrian suffered major injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the Chevrolet Colorado was uninjured and remained on scene to cooperate with the investigation.
Investigators from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Investigative Team (M.A.I.T) arrived and are conducting an investigation. Navajo Road was closed between the intersections of Powhatan Road and Osage Road for approximately five hours while deputies processed the scene for evidence and interviewed witnesses.
