This is an updated message from the Fairfield Office of Emergency Management regarding current and potential flood conditions.

The Township of Fairfield is still in a local state of emergency. As of 8 AM today, the Passaic River gauge at Pinebrook indicated the river to be at 21.1’. This level indicates a transition from major to moderate flood conditions. While water continues to recede, citizens can still expect to encounter flooded and/or closed roadways. Motorists should not drive through flooded or closed roadways.

Route 46 Eastbound is now open, however other major roadways still remain closed. These roads include:

  • Bloomfield Avenue
  • Horseneck Road (from Hollywood Avenue to the Montville line)
  • Little Falls Road @ Pier Lane and @ Carlos Drive
  • Two Bridges Road into Lincoln Park

It is important that residents who have water in their basements and who also have water surrounding their homes at the same time, resist the idea of pumping out their basement until the water surrounding their home recedes.

As we move into the damage assessment and clean up phase for this flood emergency, the Office of Emergency Management is asking for the public’s cooperation and assistance so that this phase can be done in an efficient and effective way.

As soon as possible, the OEM will provide residents with more specific dates and instructions on how to dispose of flood damaged property only. For now, residents should document all flood damaged items with photographs as this documentation may be required before this damaged property is picked up by the township. It is anticipated that sandbags will be picked up at curbside during the week starting January 2, 2024.

For more information relating to this flood emergency or to see a list of all affected roadways, citizens can go to the Township of Fairfield’s website at www.fairfieldnj.org. You can also call the Township’s flood hotline at (201) 522-9267 to speak live with an officer.  This phone will remain available throughout this emergency.
