On December 19, 2023, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Fremont Police Department responded to a disturbance complaint with “shots fired” near the 3100 block of Medina Common. Officers arrived within minutes of being dispatched and located an adult male subject suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Fremont Fire medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but the subject succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. Patrol officers, coupled with members of the Investigative unit, Major Crimes Unit, and Crime Reduction Unit, located and interviewed potential witnesses to the shooting. Nyla Turner (25 years old, female, resident of Fremont), was soon arrested for Penal Code 187 – Murder and Penal Code 182 - Conspiracy to commit murder.
Additionally, the primary suspect was tentatively identified based on witness statements, surveillance footage, and additional evidence. Investigators immediately attempted to locate the suspect, but it appeared he escaped the perimeter in a vehicle before police arrival.
On December 20, 2023, Fremont Police Department personnel continued the investigation, leading them to Oakland. Officers located a vehicle of interest near the 1000 block of 16th Street. Surveillance was established, and Oakland Police Officers eventually conducted a surround and callout. Darreis Buckley (26 years old, male, resident of Oakland) eventually exited the residence and was taken into custody. Buckley was arrested for Penal Code 187 – Murder and Penal Code 29800(a)(1) – Felon in possession of a firearm.
The case against Buckley and Turner will be presented to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for charging on December 22, 2023.
