Quick Response and Teamwork Save the Holidays Following Rohnert Park Condominium Fire

ROHNERT PARK, CA – At approximately 2:30 PM on December 21, 2023, the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety Dispatch center responded to multiple emergency calls reporting a structure fire in the area of 400 Enterprise Drive. First responders arrived within minutes and saw flames coming from a second-story balcony, progressing into the attic.

Firefighters were able to enter through the front door and begin an aggressive attack on the fire by removing sheetrock from the ceiling to access the fire that was spreading through the attic.  This condominium housing unit consisted of four attached units upstairs and four units below.  Based on the year this complex was built, the attic did not have fire breaks between the units (known as a common attic); therefore, if more time passed, the fire would have extended to more of the residential units.

Additional fire resources were able to quickly gather and save almost all the already wrapped Christmas presents under a tree in the primary unit.  Those gifts were there for two small children living in one of the units.

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes and the remainder of the time, the fire crew assisted with salvaging as much property as possible.  Millions of dollars were saved in this fire because of a quick response, aggressive fire attack, and coordination with allied agencies.

Two units were deemed uninhabitable due to sheetrock and water damage.  The preliminary estimate of damages is approximately $100,000. Two families were displaced and received aid from American Red Cross.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire's accidental nature, likely ignited by hot ashes from a fireplace were left on the balcony.

The Department of Public Safety would like to thank Rancho Adobe Fire Protection District, Sonoma County Fire District, Petaluma Fire Department, and the Sebastopol Fire Department for responding to the incident.

The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety remains committed to the safety and well-being of our community. We remind residents to exercise caution with potential fire hazards, especially during the holiday season.
