Detectives Warn the Public About Phone Scams After Elderly Resident is Scammed Out of Money

DATE/TIME: December 27, 2023/12:59 P.M.

INCIDENT: PC 484- Theft by Fraud

LOCATION: 9400 Block of Twin Oaks Place, Rancho Cucamonga

SUSPECT(S): Unknown

VICTIM(S): 79-Year-Old Female Resident of Rancho Cucamonga

SUMMARY:
On Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 12:59 P.M., Rancho Cucamonga deputies responded to the report of a theft. Sometime in October 2023, the 79-year-old victim was contacted by a caller who claimed to be a representative of Wal-Mart International. The unknown suspect told the victim her identity had been stolen and she was a victim of possible fraud. The suspect also told the victim she was required to deposit $1,250,000.00 into a Bank of America account otherwise she’d be arrested. The victim complied and transferred the funds.

In December 2023, the victim received another call asking for more money. This time, the suspect caller told the victim she would be arrested or killed if she didn’t comply. The victim told her son what happened, and they contacted law enforcement to report the fraud. This case is ongoing, and investigators are working with the victim and financial institutions to identify the suspect(s) involved.

Every year identity theft, fraud, and scams impact victims across the country.  Many of these victims are from vulnerable populations who cannot afford the financial loss or frustrations associated with these crimes. Remember, government agencies and local law enforcement will not call you asking for money or your personal information. If you suspect a caller or email contact may be a scam, end the interaction and contact the business or entity directly to verify the nature of the call. Do not use contact information provided by the suspected caller/email, look up the company or agency’s information from trusted sources.

If you believe you have been a victim of theft by fraud or have any information regarding the above case, please contact the Rancho Cucamonga Station at 909-477-2800. Callers wishing to remain anonymous should call the We-Tip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME (27463) or go to www.wetip.com.
