DATE/TIME: Thursday, January 4, 2024

INCIDENT: Located Military Ordnance Disposal

LOCATION: 62000 Block of Crestview Drive, Joshua Tree, Ca.

SUSPECT(S): None

VICTIM(S): None

SUMMARY: On Tuesday, January 2, 2024, deputies from the Morongo Basin Sheriff's Station were contacted by a contractor who was installing a septic tank in a residential area of Joshua Tree. While operating his excavator, the operator discovered two suspicious cylidrical items that appeared to be unexploded military ordnances, buried approximately two-three feet in the ground.

Deputies from the Sheriff's Department Bomb/Arson detail responded to the area and confirmed the presence of military type ordnances. Assistance was requested from the EOD division of MCAGCC who also responded to assist with the investigation.  After confirmation the devices were military ordnances, MCAGCC EOD assumed the primary responsibility of the disposal of the devices.  The Sheriff's Bomb/Arson detail remained on-site to render any assistance needed.

During the investigation, it was determined several pieces of military ordnances were buried at the location by an unknown person, at an unknown time, possibly several years prior to their discovery. After inspection of the ordnances, it was determined the safest way to render the devices safe is to dispose of it on-site, using a small controlled explosive charge.

This press release is to notify residents of Joshua Tree of the planned detonation, later today. Residents in the immediate area will be notified and evacuated to a safe distance prior to the disposal of these items. The ordnances are not deemed to be a threat to the community and the on-site render safe is considered routine and the safest method of disposal in accordance with environmental protection standards.

Any questions regarding the disposal of the ordnaces or the participation of MCAGCC EOD should be directed to Captain J. Huizar at (760)830-5310.
