Overcrowded Clayton County Jail has 2nd Inmate on Inmate Murder within 42 days. SHERIFF LEVON ALLEN

On 01/04/2024, Inmate Abdul Woodard brutally beat his cellmate, murdering him.

SHERIFF LEVON ALLEN activated his Criminal Investigation Division & Internal Affairs Unit to Criminally Charge Inmate Abdul Woodard:

Felony Murder
Aggravated Assault
And Simple Battery

Inmate Woodard was arrested at the Atlanta Airport for Baggage Removal (2 Counts) on 12/15/2023. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 01/24/2024.

During the investigation, it was determined Inmate Woodard was sleeping out in the day room awaiting a cell location. He was moved into a cell where he had to sleep on the floor (3 inmates to a cell). The door closed and when it opened again, Woodard murdered one of his roommates.

The Clayton County Jail has a capacity of 1,536 beds, placing 2 inmates in a cell. The Clayton County Jail is currently at approximately 1900 inmates, placing the inmates on the floor and 3 inmates in a cell.

The jail is currently overcrowded and has over 300 inmates sleeping on the floor. This causes issues among the inmates. When one inmate uses the toilet and the other inmates inmate's head is down by the toilet, you will have fights, and when you are in a room where everything in the room is steel, metal, or concrete, it becomes a deadly cage match.

SHERIFF LEVON ALLEN has asked for an additional $6.5 million funding from the board of commissioners to expand the jail’s capacity and to properly classify inmates.

The Sheriff needs all 5 Clayton County Board of Commissioners to reconsider their decision to deny the Sheriff mobile trailers to provide immediate relief to the jail overcrowding and the inmates sleeping on the floor.

SHERIFF LEVON ALLEN and the Clayton Sheriff’s Office give condolences to the victim's family, and wants the inmates and citizen of Clayton County to be very clear that he takes the safety of the Inmate and employees in the Clayton County Jail very serious and won’t stop until everything in the 24 year old jail is replaced and brought up to standards.

I’m 99% sure none of the elected officials in the county go home and sleep on a cold concrete floor, so don’t make the inmates in the jail do it. Remember one day it could be a loved one of yours just Do the right thing.
