IMPD Detectives arrested 29-year-old Jerry Phillips for his alleged role in a homicide that occurred in the 4100 block of N. Mitthoefer Rd.
On Sunday, December 24, 2023, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) East District officers responded to 4120 N. Mitthoefer Rd on a report of a walk-in person shot at the fire station. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male, with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. Medics responded and transported the victim to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased by medical staff.
The IMPD Homicide detectives responded to the scene to begin their investigation. Preliminary information led investigators to believe the shooting incident occurred near the 9900 block of E. 38th Street. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to identify and collect potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner’s Office (MCCO) is assisting and will determine the exact cause and manner of death. The MCCO will release the decedent’s name once a proper next-of-kin notification has been made.
Detectives continued to investigate and, based on various evidence including cooperative community members, were able to identify Jerry Phillips as the alleged suspect. On January 4, 2024, the IMPD Violent Crimes Unit located and apprehended Phillips without further incident. Phillips was subsequently arrested for murder.
An arrest is merely an accusation. The suspect should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. The MCPO will make the final charging decision.
