A Tribute to Mayor Buddy Litchult

On Wednesday January 3, 2024, the Borough of Waldwick was given the sad news of the passing of a good friend, dedicated public servant, Mayor Buddy Litchult.

Buddy was born and raised in Waldwick, he is predeceased by his wife Helen (2001), survived by 6 children, 15 grandchildren, 1 great grandson and loving dog Boots.

Buddy served for 2 years in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged as a corporal.

Buddy was a former member of Waldwick Police Department leaving as a Detective Lieutenant, a retired Vice President of Security for Dime Savings Bank in New York City and a proud graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Buddy was a Councilman and Mayor of Waldwick, serving on several committees, member of the NJ politicians hall of fame, member of the Waldwick School Board, a lifelong and exempt member of the Waldwick Fire Department, member of the Knights of Columbus, past president of Waldwick Jr Football League, past Commander of the VFW Post 1049, past Commander of Walter Nightengale American Legion Post 57, member of  Waldwick Pistol & Rifle Club, member of the Romeo Club, member of the Marine Corps League, 1st Marine Division Association, member of the Gooney Birds,  parishioner of St. Luke’s Church where he was a former altar boy, served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Senior Lucans.

Everything that Buddy did for our community, he did without asking for anything in return. He was a dedicated person who always worried about others.  He was always ready to extend his hand to you when he saw you to say hello and to greet you as his friend.

I will always remember Buddy as Mayor when I was a Councilman. He was dedicated to his position, he loved being Mayor, and attended all the town’s functions with a smile. He never raised his voice, but always got his message across, leading by example.

Buddy will always be remembered for his caring and giving heart and his legacy of service to others.

Buddy you will always be a part of our lives, your example of goodness and service to others will always be with us. We are going to miss your kindness and unselfish dedication to Waldwick.

Martin Luther King Jr once said, “Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You do not have to have a college degree to serve. You do not even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love”.

I have ordered that all Waldwick Flags be lowered on Friday January 12, 2024, and raised back up on Monday January 15, 2024 in honor of a great public servant Mayor Buddy Litchult.

Buddy, you have fought the good fight, you have finished the course, you have kept the faith. May you now rest in the hands of God who will be welcoming you home to be with your beloved wife Helen and reward you for all the good you have done.

Rest in peace dear friend, Heaven has gained another Warrior; Waldwick has gained another Angel to watch over us.

Mayor Tom Giordano
