Assault with a Deadly Weapon Suspect Arrested, Burson CA

On January 1, 2024, at about 1:15 am. Calaveras County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to reports of a burglary and assault with a deadly weapon (handgun) in the 3000 block of Burson Rd, Burson.
Upon arrival, the deputies learned that the victim was house-sitting for his family members when he heard someone running outside the residence.  The victim went outside to determine the source of the sounds.   While checking the property, the victim located Suspect Michael Gene Coleman, 54 years of age, Burson.  The victim told suspect Brown he was trespassing and to leave the property.  Suspect Brown ran from the victim into the residence.  The victim armed himself with a shotgun and went into the residence to demand the suspect leave.  The victim located the suspect in the kitchen, hitting the counter with a hammer.  The victim ordered the suspect to leave when suspect Brown armed himself with a handgun.  Suspect Brown pointed the handgun at the victim, causing the victim to back out of the residence to a safe location. Once at a safe location, the victim notified the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies established a perimeter and began systematically checking the property for the suspect.  When they began checking the main residence, the deputies heard the suspect inside near one of the rooms.  One of the deputies on the scene was an active member of the Calaveras County Crisis Negotiation Team. He began efforts to talk to suspect Brown, hoping to resolve the incident peacefully.  The deputy was able to get suspect Brown to exit the residence without incident around 3:30 am. He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the county jail for booking.
