Advisory

State of Emergency declared in NJ; Flooding expected in Hoboken Tuesday night; Discounted Parking offered

Governor Phil Murphy has declared a State of Emergency for all of New Jersey starting at 5 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday Jan. 9, in advance of a storm that is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for Hudson County, including Hoboken, from tomorrow (Tuesday) evening through Wednesday afternoon. A strong storm, with rainfall of 2 to 3 inches and localized higher amounts, is predicted. Flooding is likely in low-lying areas, especially during periods of high tide including at approximately 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9.

NWS has also issued a wind advisory from 6 p.m. tomorrow through 6 a.m. Wednesday for our area, and a coastal flood advisory is in effect for Hoboken from 5 a.m. through 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10.

"I encourage residents to use caution and avoid travel if possible, during the evening rush hours when some of the heaviest rain is expected in Hoboken," said Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla. "Please consider staying safe indoors and limit driving during the peak rain periods, when we expect the storm to cause flash flooding."

Avoid flood-prone areas

The Hoboken Office of Emergency Management OEM reminds residents to avoid flood-prone areas. Intense rainfall of greater than 0.8 inch per hour could result in flooding. Do not walk or drive around barricades or through flooded areas. Do not move barricades.

Please report flooded intersections and clogged drain inlets by calling the NHSA Hotline at (866) 689-3970.

Winds of 20 to 30 miles-per-hour (mph) are expected with gusts as high as 50 mph.

Residents should secure all loose objects outside or bring them inside, especially from balconies. Outdoor tents should be taken down depending on the wind load. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle.

Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, resulting in power outages.

Please report power outages and downed wires to PSEG at https://nj.myaccount.pseg.com/myservicepublic/outagepublic.

Discounted parking offered

Due to the storm and potential for flooding, the City is offering a special rate of $5 per 24-hour period in Garages B (28 Second St.) and D (215 Hudson St.) to residents with a valid Resident On-Street Parking Permit or Temporary Parking Permit. This rate will be available from 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9 through 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10. Hoboken residents with disabilities who possess a handicapped license plate or hang tag for their permitted vehicle may also park in the Midtown Garage (371 Fourth St.) for the same reduced rate. Garage space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Regular rates apply at other times.

Remain alert, stay informed, and exercise caution
