Advisory

Flooding expected tonight; Recreation programs end at 5pm; Discounted parking reminder

A State of Emergency, declared by Governor Phil Murphy for the entire state of New Jersey, will go into effect at 5 p.m. today due to heavy rains and winds.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a flood watch for Hudson County, including Hoboken, from 6 p.m. this evening, through 6 p.m. tomorrow. A high-wind warning will be in effect from 6 p.m. through 6 a.m. tomorrow, and a NWS coastal flood advisory has been issued for tomorrow from 5 a.m. through 10 a.m.

The storm is forecasted to bring heavy rain of 2 to 3 inches, with localized higher amounts possible, and winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph.

Flooding is likely in low-lying areas, especially during periods of high tide. The next high tide for our area is at approximately 6:45 p.m.

Recreation, sanitation, and street cleaning updates

All City recreation fields, programs/games, and indoor gym facilities will close at 5 p.m. today.

Street cleaning is canceled for tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Waste collection and Christmas Tree disposal are suspended for tonight. Please do not put trash cans, recycling bins, or trees on the curb tonight. Certain City garbage cans may be removed from public roadways due to high winds.

Discounted parking offered

Due to the potential for flooding, the City is offering a special rate of $5 per 24-hour period in Garages B (28 Second St.) and D (215 Hudson St.) to residents with a valid Resident On-Street Parking Permit or Temporary Parking Permit. This rate will be available from 12 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9 (today) through 12 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 10 (tomorrow). Hoboken residents with disabilities who possess a handicapped license plate or hang tag for their permitted vehicle may also park in the Midtown Garage (371 Fourth St.) for the same reduced rate.

Garage space is limited and typically fills quickly during storm events. Please note that space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Regular rates apply at other times.

Avoid flood-prone areas

Hoboken OEM reminds residents to avoid flood-prone areas. Intense rainfall of greater than 0.8 inch per hour could result in flooding. Do not walk or drive around barricades. Do not remove flood advisory signs or move barricades from flood-prone areas.

Avoid driving during the height of the storm. If driving is necessary, please use extreme caution and leave extra time as roads may be closed causing detours. Do NOT drive through flood waters. It is dangerous and can cause property damage to cars and nearby buildings. Stranded vehicles can impede emergency responses.

Please report flooded intersections and clogged drain inlets by calling the NHSA Hotline at (866) 689-3970.

Secure loose objects

Residents should secure all loose objects outside or bring them inside, especially from balconies. Outdoor tents should be taken down depending on the wind load. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle.

Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, resulting in power outages.

Please report power outages and downed wires to PSEG at https://nj.myaccount.pseg.com/myservicepublic/outagepublic.

Remain alert, stay informed, and exercise caution

Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts regularly and are encouraged to follow the City’s social media accounts for storm updates including the Hoboken OEM Twitter page at @HobokenOEM, the City’s Twitter page at @CityofHoboken, and the Hoboken Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/Hoboken. Residents, business owners, and other stakeholders are also encouraged to sign up to receive updates via the Nixle System by visiting: www.hobokennj.gov/alerts.
