Advisory

NCPD urges residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel tonight through tomorrow morning!

In anticipation of tonight's and tomorrow's heavy rain and wind gusts, the New Castle Police would like to urge our residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

In the event of life-threatening emergencies, dial 911.

To report downed wires, road blockages, and non-life-threatening issues, contact (914) 238-4422. Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by tree limbs, leaves, etc.

Please do not call the Police if you lose power. Calling the Police to report a power loss only serves to tie up emergency telephone lines. You will be referred to contact Con Edison directly at 1-800-75-CONED. Calling Con Edison enters your power loss into their computerized database. You can also report outages, view the outage map, and check outage status at www.conEd.com.

Con Edison would also like us to encourage their customers to sign up for text alerts. You can use your cell phone to text REG to OUTAGE (688243) and follow the prompts. You'll need your account number to confirm your zip code. To retrieve your account number, log in to My Account or check your bill. This information is also located on their website at www.coned.com/text

If you're in the car and a flash flood is imminent or occurring, try to stay calm and remember these tips

  • Don't drive around barricades: If you come across a barrier blocking a flooded road, do not drive around it. Instead, back up and find an alternate route.
  • Avoid driving on bridges over fast-moving water: Floodwater can wash out a bridge with little or no warning. If water is moving quickly under a bridge, avoid driving over the bridge.
  • Avoid driving through floodwater: Driving through floodwater is dangerous, as it only takes 12 inches of water for a small sedan or SUV to float, says the NWS. You should also avoid driving through large puddles. They may look shallower than they are and can disguise hazards such as a washed-out road or sharp debris.
  • Stay in your vehicle if you're surrounded by fast-moving water: Unless water is rising inside your vehicle, do not exit the vehicle when you're surrounded by quickly-moving floodwater. If water is rising inside your vehicle, exit the car and get onto the roof.
Avoid all fallen wires:
  • You can't tell if a power line is energized just by looking at it. Assume all fallen power lines are live and proceed with extreme caution.
  • Do not drive over fallen wires. Always follow utility personnel instructions regarding fallen power lines.
  • If you see a fallen power line, stay at least 30 feet away from it and anything it contacts. The ground around a power line and any objects it contacts may be energized.
  • Do not attempt to move a fallen power line or anything else in contact with it using an object such as a broom or stick. Even materials like wood or cloth can conduct electricity if even slightly wet.
If you're ever in doubt about your or your family's safety during a flood, remember to turn around, don't drown.

The New Castle Police Department maintains a voluntary list of people who may require additional help and would like to be checked on during extreme weather.

If you or someone you know would like to be added to this list, call (914) 238-4422.

If you have not already done so, sign up for Nixle at https://local.nixle.com/register/ or text your zip code to 88877.
