Ongoing rain gets steadier through the day, with the bulk of the heaviest after sunset and lingering into the evening. Peak rates likely happen late evening and around midnight, as a possible embedded squall arrives. 1-3 inches of rain is forecasted with possibly some areas of 4 inches.
 
Afterwards, rain quickly tapers off to just some lingering light showers. In all, this is going to be a very impactful event. While we do likely see roadway ponding and low lying/drainage issues, the more significant issues will be around streams and creeks. Many will exceed their banks and lead to flooded our roads and threaten nearby properties. Larger rivers also see sharp rises and likely reach minor to moderate stage, but may not crest until Wed-Thu.
 
In additional to the rain, gusts will increase today, peaking again in the evening in the 50 - 55mph range. In conjunction with saturated grounds, some downed trees/branches and power outages are likely.

Governor Phil Murphy has declared that New Jersey will enter a State of Emergency effective at 5 p.m. today, Tuesday, January 9.
 
“This storm will exacerbate the effects of the inclement conditions we experienced in December and this past weekend and may precede another storm Friday night. As always, I urge all New Jerseyans – including residents in our coastal and riverine communities – to follow all safety protocols and remain off the roads unless absolutely necessary,” said Governor Murphy.
