Residents Escape with Pets in Early Morning Structure Fire in Rohnert Park

ROHNERT PARK - Early this morning, a structure fire was reported in the 1100 block of San Antonio Drive, Rohnert Park. The emergency call was made to 9-1-1 dispatch at approximately 5:30 AM. The fire was observed climbing up the side of the garage and extending into the attic.

Upon arrival, fire crews from Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety, Rancho Adobe Fire District, and the Sonoma County Fire District began an aggressive attack on the progression of the fire. Their quick action contained the majority of the damage to the garage and attic space. The fire was successfully brought under control within 20 minutes.

The two residents and their cat were unharmed in the incident. The Red Cross is currently assisting the family and will help with securing accommodations.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Preliminary findings suggest it may have started on the exterior of the home by the garage, possibly due to hot ashes being discarded into a garbage can. As a result of the fire, smoke, and water damage, the residence has been deemed uninhabitable.

The Department of Public Safety would like to thank the Santa Rosa Fire Department for covering other calls in the city as well as Sonoma Life Support for standing by on scene in case anyone needed medical attention.

In light of this incident, the Department of Public Safety urges the community to exercise caution when discarding ashes. We recommend using a metal container for ash disposal and ensuring it is placed away from any combustible materials. This is the second fire within 30 days attributed to discarded hot ashes.
