Severe Weather Shelter Open Tonight through Monday due to Freezing Temperatures
Due to anticipated freezing weather conditions the Bainbridge Island Emergency Management Program will activate its Severe Weather Shelter.
We anticipate the shelter will open tonight, January 11 and remain open through Monday, January 15 at the Senior Community Center, 370 Brien Ave. SE. Shelter residents must check in between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. If no one checks in, the shelter will close for the night. The Senior Community Center will then re-open the next morning at 8:30 a.m. for daytime warming.
If anyone needs assistance after hours, they must call 911 and have a police/fire escort to check into an activated shelter.
Individuals who need transportation to the Senior Community Center can request a ride on Kitsap Transit’s BI Ride. Rides may be requested for pickup until 3:50 p.m. every day except Sunday. To schedule a ride, please call 1.844.4BI.RIDE.
Individuals who need transportation to the Senior Community Center on Sunday or other days after 3:50 p.m., may call the Senior Community Center at 206-842-1616 to request a ride. The City is partnering with Island Volunteer Caregivers (IVC) to coordinate transportation to and from the Senior Community Center on Sunday and weekdays after 3:50 p.m.
If your neighborhood is part of the City's "Map Your Neighborhood" program, please consider using this as a resource to check on your neighbors who are elderly or have any disabilities, access, or functional needs.
The Bainbridge Island Police Department is also coordinating with the liveaboard community on Bainbridge and is offering free moorage at the City Dock for the duration of the storm. This will allow vessels to plug in to shore power and operate electric heating devices. If space or electrical capacity is full, then individuals are encouraged to check in at the Senior Center between 6 and 8 PM.
