January 11-12 Winter Weather Advisory and Extreme Cold Preparedness Tips

 Attention Lee’s Summit Residents,

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 7 PM this evening until 9 PM CST Friday. Alongside this advisory, we provide essential tips for extreme cold preparedness:

Weather Conditions:

  • Expect mixed precipitation, snow accumulations of up to one inch, ice accumulations around five hundredths of an inch, and wind gusts up to 40 mph.
  • Affected areas include portions of east central and northeast Kansas, and north central, northwest, and west central Missouri.
  • Time frame: 7 PM today to 9 PM CST Friday.
  • Potential impacts: Slippery roads, affecting commutes.

 Precautionary Actions:

  • Travel with caution.
  • Have emergency kit in your car.

 City’s Response:

  •  City crews continue addressing residential streets and will transition to treating streets with salt for the upcoming winter event.
  • Streets may remain slick despite treatment due to dropping temperatures.

 Warming Centers:

  •  Available at Lee’s Summit Community Centers and Mid-Continent Public Libraries during normal business hours.

  • Home Heating Safety: Proper maintenance of heating systems, installation of carbon monoxide detectors, and avoidance of using ovens or stoves for heating.
  • Insulate Pipes: Protect pipes from freezing, especially in unheated areas.
  • Emergency Kit: Include food, water, blankets, flashlight, first-aid kit, medications, and pet supplies.
  • Vehicle Preparedness: Maintain a full gas tank and prepare an emergency kit in your car.
  • Stay Informed: Keep up with local weather updates and have a battery-powered or hand-crank radio.
  • Plan for Power Outages: Have alternative charging methods and a safe backup power source.
