Pedestrian Succumbs to Injuries after being Struck by Two Vehicles on Highway 18

DATE/TIME: January 11, 2024, at 06:05 p.m.

INCIDENT: Vehicle versus pedestrian fatal traffic crash

LOCATION: State Highway 18 / Pawnee Road, Apple Valley, CA

PARTIES INVOLVED: Pedestrian- Hispanic male, 54-year-old, Apple Valley resident
Driver of black Toyota Tacoma- Hispanic male, 48-year-old, Apple Valley resident
Driver of silver Dodge Ram 1500- Hispanic male, 37-year-old, Apple Valley resident. 

 
SUMMARY: On Friday, January 11, 2024, at approximately 06:05 p.m., deputies from the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station and rescue personnel from the Apple Valley Fire Department responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic crash. The crash occurred on State Highway 18 at the intersection of Pawnee Road in the town of Apple Valley. Through investigation, deputies determined a pedestrian walked north crossing State Highway 18 near Pawnee Road. A black Toyota Tacoma drove eastbound on State Highway 18 approaching Pawnee Road. For an unknown reason the pedestrian ran into the roadway hitting the passenger side of the Toyota. The pedestrian fell into the eastbound lanes of State Highway 18 and was struck by a silver Dodge Ram 1500.  

The pedestrian sustained major injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the Toyota and Dodge had no injuries. Drugs or alcohol were determined not to be a factor in this crash. Investigators from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T) arrived and are conducting an investigation. State Highway 18 between Navajo Road and Quinnault Road was closed for about 5 hours while investigators processed the scene for evidence.
