Attend Hoboken Renewable Energy Program information sessions

Residents and property owners can attend two information sessions to learn more about Hoboken Renewable Energy Program changes and updates next week.

The sessions will be offered in both English and Spanish on:

In May 2018, the City of Hoboken adopted Ordinance #18-294 authorizing the establishment of the Renewable Energy Program for the purpose of providing more clean green energy at a lower electricity price than what PSE&G is currently offering. This program is a major step toward achieving the City’s goal of reaching net-zero energy by 2030, as established by Hoboken’s Climate Action Plan. Since the inception of the program in 2021, Hoboken residents have saved a combined total of $651,957.

On Nov. 15, 2023, a notice was sent to all Hoboken residents currently enrolled in the Hoboken Renewable Energy Program regarding the contract term expiration in December 2023 and program renewal on March 1, 2024. Current program participants were returned to their previous service through PSE&G at the prevailing default rate on Jan.1, 2024 and until program renewal on March 1, 2024. Please note, that no action is required from residents currently enrolled in the Hoboken Renewable Energy Program as service through the PSE&G program and enrollment in the updated  Hoboken Renewable Energy Program are automatic.

The program is an opt-out program as required by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities as stated in  N.J.A.C. 14:4-6. If the City receives returned mail for any resident who no longer lives in Hoboken, the resident will not be automatically enrolled in the program. Please note, residents can opt-out of the program at any time through December 31, 2024. There are no fees associated with opting out of the program.

Additional information about the updated program will be mailed to residents this month. This mailer will include details of the new program, including the 100% renewable and minimum renewable options, frequently asked questions, and methods you can use to opt out of the program, should you wish not to participate. All mail will clearly state “Hoboken Renewable Energy Program” on it, with a return address from "City of Hoboken c/o Direct Energy."

PSE&G will continue to distribute residents’ electricity and will remain their utility, but residents will buy their electricity supply through the Hoboken Renewable Energy Program.

For updated program information, questions, or concerns, please call the program energy consultants at 866-688-5197 or visit the City’s Renewable Energy Program website at www.hobokennj.gov/renewableenergy.
