SMPD needs help identifying a sexual assault suspect. 
 
San Mateo, CA – The San Mateo Police Department is asking the public to help identify a suspect involved in a sexual assault.        

On December 26, 2023, the victim contacted SMPD to report a sexual assault that happened earlier in the evening.  The victim told responding officers the assault occurred on 3rd Avenue overpass around 6:30 pm., as the victim was walking over Highway 101.  The victim was approached by a male suspect.  The suspect attempted to talk with the victim, then sexually assaulted her before running west on 3rd Avenue.  The victim said the suspect was possibly a mixed-race male wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.  The suspect spoke to the victim in English and said his name was “Eric.”  Officers immediately searched the area, but the suspect was not found. 
 
Officers have continued to investigate this crime, following all leads, and gathering new information. A sketch of the suspect was completed, and we are asking if anyone recognizes the suspect in this sketch to contact SMPD. 
 
Suspect Description:
Adult male around 25-years-old
Light Complexion
5’6” tall, 140-150 pounds
Short dark curly hair
Dark brown eyes
Thin dark mustache
Freckles around nose and under eyes

We need the community’s support in reporting crimes and being a good witness.  If you witness a crime, contact police immediately.  Try to remain as calm as possible and do your best to answer questions on the phone.  Remember details such as the suspect’s appearance, clothing, any distinguishing features, and which direction they flee. Once the police arrive at the scene, cooperate fully, and provide the officers with all the information you have.  Your observations can greatly assist law enforcement in their investigation.
