On Wednesday, January 17th, 2024, at approximately 9:28 PM, the Petaluma Police Department Dispatch Center received an emergency call from a community member reporting a vehicle collision in the area of Frates Road and Lakeville Highway. On arrival, officers saw two vehicles in the middle of the intersection.

During the investigation, officers contacted Phillip Chaney (63), a driver of one of the vehicles involved in the collision. Officers discovered Chaney displayed objective signs of alcohol intoxication and initiated a DUI investigation.  The investigating officer determined Chaney had been operating his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and placed him under arrest. Chaney was subsequently transported to the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility after being medically cleared. Chaney was booked on violation of 23153 CVC- DUI Collision with Injury. An injured party was transported by Petaluma Fire Department to a local medical facility.

The Petaluma Police Department continues to be committed to increasing traffic safety and to reducing the number of alcohol-related collisions. Petaluma Police advise motorists to plan accordingly when consuming alcoholic beverages by designating a sober driver or sharing a ride.  Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
