INCIDENT: In-Custody Death Investigation
LOCATION: West Valley Detention Center, 9500 Etiwanda Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga
DECEDENT: Keith Crossley, 62-year-old Male Transient of San Bernardino
SUMMARY:
On Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 4:15 p.m., deputies from the West Valley Detention Center discovered an inmate, Keith Crossley, in his cell, unresponsive. Medical staff and deputies began life-saving measures on Crossley before he was transported to a hospital. Crossley was pronounced deceased at about 6:17 p.m.
The Sheriff’s Department’s Specialized Investigations Division responded to the hospital and the jail and began an investigation. There were no apparent signs of drug use or trauma, and investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Crossley was arrested on Monday, January 15, 2024, by the San Bernardino Police Department for assault with a deadly weapon, not a firearm, and probation violation. He was booked in at the Central Detention Center and later transferred to the West Valley Detention Center where he remained until his death.
