One Arrested for DUI on Dirt Bike

On Monday, January 22, 2024 around 5PM, a Novato Police Officer observed a man riding a dirt bike with no license plates on the street in the Redwood/Grant Ave area. The dirt bike was not in a street legal state and the officer made a traffic stop.

After speaking with driver, it was determined that the dirt bike was not registered and the driver did not have a motorcycle license or insurance, required by DMV to operate the vehicle. The driver was identified as 43-year-old, Collin Varney of Novato. He displayed signs of impairment and refused most Field Sobriety Tests (FST’s), as well as the Preliminary Alcohol Screening (PAS). Varney was arrested and provided a breath sample of .30 Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC). The legal blood alcohol content for motorists in California is .08 (BAC) or below. He was safely booked into the Marin County jail for driving a motor vehicle under the influence. The dirt bike was towed as a result of driving without registration or having a valid motorcycle license. Thankfully, no one was injured during this incident.

The Novato Police Department continues to prioritize enforcement of impaired drivers and create safer roadways for our community. Please remember it is a violation to operate any motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, including marijuana and prescribed medications, that can impair the driver. We encourage our community to report impaired drivers on our roadways and to engage in responsible consumption of alcohol by designating a driver or utilizing a ride share service such as Uber or Lyft. Give us a call day (415-897-4361) or night (415-899-1122) to report suspicious activity. In an emergency, call 9-1-1. For more information: www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/drunk-driving.

This is a great reminder to check DMV’s website for which type of license is required to operate a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, scooter, or E-bike. DMV Information: www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/motorcycle-handbook/license-requirements/

Stay safe Novato!
