Narrative:
On January 23, 2024, California State Parks requested assistance from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office with an investigation near La Jolla Canyon Trail.  A deputy from the Camarillo station responded and determined Sean Briseno, a convicted felon, was in possession of a loaded and operable P-80 firearm while under the influence of a controlled substance. Briseno also was in possession of a significant quantity of methamphetamine and indicia of narcotics sales.

A deputy from the Camarillo Police Department was sent to assist California State Parks at La Jolla Canyon Trail along the Pacific Coast Highway located in the unincorporated area of Camarillo.  When the deputy arrived, he identified the driver of the vehicle as Sean Briseno, and learned he is a convicted felon.  During the investigation, the deputy identified symptoms of recent drug use and detained Briseno.  Briseno was searched and a loaded and operable P-80 pistol with no serial number was found tucked in his waist band.  These types of pistols are commonly referred to as “ghost guns”.  A search of Briseno’s vehicle was conducted and 163 gross grams of methamphetamine, 80 gross grams of marijuana, digital scales, police scanners, narcotics paraphernalia, and a significant amount of United States currency was located in the vehicle.  Based on California law, a convicted felon is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.

Members of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit assisted the deputy and seized additional evidence of narcotics sales and the U.S. currency as proceeds of narcotics sales.

Briseno was arrested for PC 29800(a) – Felon in possession of a firearm, PC 30305(a)(1) – Felon in possession of ammunition, PC 26500(a) – Illegal transfer of a firearm, HS 11370.1(a) – Possession of narcotics with a firearm, HS 11378 – Possession of controlled substance for sale and HS 11550(e) – Under the influence of a controlled substance with a firearm.  The case will be submitted to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.

Deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office are committed to safeguarding the lives and property of residents of Ventura County.  By identifying criminal activity and working proactively to enforce laws, the deputy located and seized an untraceable firearm, a significant amount of narcotics and identified a subject who was under the influence of a controlled substance while armed with a firearm, all of which aid in the safety of residents of Ventura County safe.
