Deputies Attempt Traffic Stop and are Led on a Pursuit; Suspect Arrested and Booked into Jail

INCIDENT: Evading a Police Officer, Prohibited to Own or Possess Ammunition
LOCATION: Danbury Avenue/ I Avenue, Hesperia
SUSPECT(S): Jose Jesus Varela, 38-year-old, resident of Hesperia
SUMMARY:
On Thursday, January 25, 2024, at about 12:23 a.m., deputies with the Hesperia Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a black Toyota Camry in the area of Danbury Avenue and I Avenue, in Hesperia, for failing to stop at a stop sign. Deputies activated lights and sirens on the vehicle to which the driver did not comply, and a pursuit ensued. The driver led deputies on an approximately 2.5-mile pursuit on residential streets at speeds of about 90 miles per hour. The driver eventually stopped and was taken into custody.
During a search of the vehicle, multiple rounds of ammunition were located. The driver, identified as Jose Varela, was found to have been convicted of a prior felony and was prohibited from possessing ammunition.
Varela was arrested and booked into the High Desert Detention Center for VC2800.2(a)-Evading a Police Officer and PC30305(A)(1)-Prohibited to Own or Possess Ammunition.
