Proactive Policing Leads to Arrests and Locating Three Firearms

Two separate proactive police encounters, two suspects arrested on firearm related charges.

San Mateo, CA – On February 6, 2024, at 5:00 p.m., San Mateo Police Officers were conducting proactive enforcement of traffic violations.  An officer made a traffic enforcement stop on a black Chrysler traveling north on Delaware Street.  The vehicle stopped near the intersection of Delaware Street and Bermuda Drive.

During the traffic stop, the driver, Evan Martinez, was asked to step out of the vehicle.  As the investigation continued, officers conducted a cursory search and located a pistol on the left side of Martinez’ body.  As officers located the firearm, Martinez started to physically resist officers.  Martinez was safely detained in handcuffs.  The firearm found on Martinez was a loaded .40 caliber Glock pistol.  Martinez was arrested and transported to San Mateo County Jail.

A few hours later, at 10:15 p.m., another San Mateo Police Officer was patrolling the area of North San Mateo Drive and Tilton Avenue.  The officer saw three people seated in a gray Ford Mustang near the intersection.  As the officer contacted the people to see if they needed any assistance, open marijuana containers, a baseball bat, and ski masks were seen in the backseat of the car.  The three people were removed from the car and an investigation was started.  The person seated in the driver’s seat, Jaylen Tomei, was in possession of a loaded pistol.  A second pistol was found under the driver’s seat.  Tomei was arrested and transported to San Mateo County Jail.
