Byram Township Announces Participation in NJDEP’s Radon Awareness Program 2024
The Byram Township Health Department announced today that it will participate in the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Radon Program.
Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally when uranium and radium break down in the soil and rock formations. Radon gas moves up through the soil and finds its way into the homes through cracks in the foundation and openings around pumps, pipes and drains. Radon is invisible, odorless and a potential hazard in our homes. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon. Radon testing is easy, and problems can be mitigated.
Radon information will be available at the Municipal Building, 10 Mansfield Drive. A limited supply of free radon test kits will be available to Byram Township homeowners, based on a first come, first serve basis. Residents are encouraged to contact the Township Health Department office at 973-347-2500 x125 to check availability or to request educational materials. The free radon kits are available at the Township Health Department office, Monday - Friday between the hours of 8:30 am-4:30 pm.
