Weather Alert-Significant Snow Expected Tuesday

WEATHER ALERT

Significant Snow Expected Tuesday... We've seen the system that we've been monitoring over the last few days trend south since our last update, which has introduced greater snow totals across much of the area. Precipitation will likely arrive as a light mix of rain, sleet, and wet snow shortly after midnight, given the early marginal temperatures. Any mix will then give way to steady snow, which will become quite heavy at times, with rates around 1-2"/hr. The majority of our accumulations will occur during the predawn and into the mid-late afternoon, with all surfaces covering up during this time. The snow will begin to ease in intensity around noon before all activity tapers off into the afternoon. Total snowfall amounts of around 7-10" are expected, with the snow being rather heavy and wet in nature. Additionally, winds will become rather strong later in the day on Tuesday, which can lead to some instances of downed tree limbs and power lines given the heavy nature of the snow. Finally, any lingering slushy or damp areas will freeze/turn slick overnight as temperatures fall into the 20s.

Con Ed customers can report downed power lines, outages, and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). Please do not call the Police Department to report loss of power. This potentially ties up telephone lines available for emergencies and you will be referred to contact Con Ed directly. Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by tree limbs, leaves, or snow.

In the event of life threatening emergencies, dial 911. Call North Castle Police at 914-273-9500 for any non-life threatening matters, traffic issues, downed trees, etc.
Reminders:
  • Do not leave vehicles parked on the street during the overnight hours. Vehicles may be summoned and possibly towed if they hinder snow removal:  “No vehicle shall be allowed or permitted to be parked, stored or kept unattended on any Town highway or other highway within the Town of North Castle from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. during the period from November 15 to April 1.”
  • Depositing of snow into the roadway is a violation of Town Code and NY State Law; as well as creating a risk to public safety. Please ensure that anyone you hire for snow removal is aware of all legal ramifications as well as legitimate public safety concerns for depositing snow and other debris into our roadways.
  • Residents must also be aware to not allow fire hydrants to be or remain obstructed. Please ask your snow removal persons to be cognizant of this significant public safety concern.
  • If you plan to use a generator, make sure that it is being used safely. Do not run a portable generator inside of your home or business; keep it outside and away from the house so that the exhaust does not cause anyone to become sick with carbon monoxide poisoning. Keep combustible materials away from the generator and, when refueling, turn it off and let it cool down. Additional generator safety tips are available HERE.
