Advisory
Cranford OEM has been monitoring the progress of a fairly large winter storm with our partners at the National Weather Service and NJ OEM. This weather system has the potential to bring an accumulation of dense, slushy precipitation and high wind gusts that could pose safety hazards. According to the National Weather Service, snow and sleet accumulations range between 4 and 8 inches with the potential for higher amounts as the storm evolves overnight.
Impacts and Timing:
Areas of light rain will arrive after 8:00 PM tonight, February 12th. Pockets of snow and sleet become a bit more noticeable on Tuesday Morning February 13th after 3:00AM before a total change to snow and sleet between 3:30AM and 6:30AM. The first inch of accumulation is expected between 5:30AM and 8:30AM and the heaviest of snowfall rates will be between 5:00AM and 11:00AM at a rate of 1” to 1.5” per hour – with the potential for a brief rate of 2” per hour. Lingering sleet will quickly give way to moderate to heavy snow – which will ease late morning and exit between 12:00PM and 3:00PM.
Heavy, wet snow combined with increasing wind gusts of up to 40MPH brings a moderate concern for some downed tree limbs and power lines. Additionally, wind gusts mixed with a wind chill of 20-30 degrees will likely refreeze leftover slushy accumulations in untreated areas.
Preparedness:
Closures or Delayed Openings:
Any deviations to Municipal Offices hours of operation will be issued in separate messaging or posted on the Township’s social media platforms. Any deviations to the regular school schedule for Cranford Public Schools, Saint Michael School or Union College will be announced directly by those respective institutions.
What can Residents do to help expedite snow removal operations, once underway?
Snow Emergency Route and Snow Ordinance:
In accordance with the provisions of § 410-30, no person shall park a vehicle upon either side of any of the streets or parts of streets thereof listed below, whenever snow has fallen and there is an accumulation of three inches or more of snow on any street or highway.

Preparedness:
- Residents are reminded to move their cars from streets and park them in driveways so our public works crews can clear streets if there is plowable snowfall. Public Works will begin plowing after an accumulation of 3 inches. Please shovel the walkways around your homes, but do not put shoveled snow back into the street after your street has been plowed. The Township is divided into 4 sectors and crews will clear snow in each starting with main roadways.
- Cranford DPW has mobilized to respond to this weather event by ensuring that their equipment is prepared and shifts are staffed. Salting operations will likely not occur in advance of this storm system beginning as a result of rain.
- Cranford Police Department, Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services are at a full complement of manpower, with Cranford Police Auxiliary on stand-by for any unexpected road closures, downed limbs, or downed wires.
- Giordano has postponed tomorrow’s Tuesday Southside Recycling Pick-Up – which will now be scheduled for Friday, February 16th, 2024.
- Localized power outages are possible. Residents are urged to stay away from any downed wires, and treat all downed wires as “live” even if power appears to be out in the area.
- Residents are encouraged to prepare for the storm by clearing leaves and other debris from downspouts and drains on your property. It is also a good time to secure loose items on your property as a result of expected wind gusts.
- Use caution while driving tomorrow into tomorrow evening. Areas of icing on untreated surfaces are also possible tomorrow evening into the overnight.
- Prevention Carbon Monoxide Poisoning - Do not run any fuel-powered generators in a garage or other enclosed space or near windows. This is a good time to test battery-powered smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
- Remove cars from roadways, especially along snow routes.
