Advisory

Winter Storm Warning in Effect on Tuesday, 4 AM - 6 PM

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and Hazardous Weather Outlook for our area, from 4 AM through 6 PM on Tuesday. The current forecast anticipates 4-8 inches of snow, with wind gusts of up to 40 MPH and hazardous travel conditions. Additionally, wind gusts and low temperatures will likely cause residual accumulations to refreeze after the storm.

  • The Westfield Police Department, Westfield Fire Department, and Department of Public Works will be monitoring the storm overnight. The DPW will begin plowing once three inches of snow has accumulated. Due to rain occurring overnight, salting operations will not be beneficial to prepare road surfaces.
  • In anticipation of plowing, please remove your cars from the street tonight. Removing cars allows plowing crews to operate efficiently as they cover 380 municipal roadways in each pass through Town. Public Ordinance 2070 prohibits parking on any street in Westfield when three or more inches of snow have fallen until snowfall stops and the entire width of the road has been plowed. The Westfield Police Department will issue tickets for violations of this ordinance. Under these circumstances, the shoveling or blowing of snow into a plowed street is also banned.
  • Downtown residents without driveways may park in Lot 4 behind Baron's. All cars must be removed from Lot 4 no later than 6 PM on Tuesday or they will be ticketed.
  • In addition, the following locations are subject to alternate side of the street parking after three inches of snow have fallen, and vehicles need to park on the side of the street with even house numbers (except for Ross Place).
    • 400 & 500 block of Downer Street
    • 400 block of First Street
    • Livingston Street
    • Cacciola Place
    • Cowperthwaite Place between Elm and Clark Streets
    • 300 & 400 block of Lenox Avenue
    • 200 block of St. Paul Street
    • Entire length of Ross Place (park on the side with odd numbers only)
  • Residents are reminded that, in addition to cars, all items should be cleared from the roadways and curbs to help facilitate efficient plowing.
  • In order to keep the roads clear for plowing, Grand Sanitation will not collect curbside recycling tomorrow. Recycling will be delayed by one day for each zone scheduled for this week (Zone 2 on Wednesday, Zone 3 on Thursday, Zone 4 on Friday, and Zone 5 on Saturday). Please do not place recyclables curbside tonight or tomorrow morning.
  • The Conservation Center will be closed tomorrow to allow for Public Works staff to focus on snow removal.
  • The forecast for heavy, wet snow and significant wind gusts may cause downed tree limbs and power lines. These tools are available to report an outage and receive status updates on power restoration:
