Police Respond to Violent Carjacking Incident on U.S. Route 30
On February 18, 2024, just before 8:30 AM, officers responded to a carjacking incident in progress on U.S. Route 30 (Absecon Boulevard). The incident unfolded as the suspect, identified as Deshaun C. Washington, 31, of Mays Landing, entered the lane of travel on U.S. Route 30, on foot, with the intent to disrupt traffic.
The victim, a motorist traveling on U.S. Route 30, came to a stop to avoid colliding with the pedestrian. Washington aggressively approached the vehicle, banging on the hood in an attempt to gain access. Fortunately, the doors were locked, preventing the suspect from entering. Undeterred, Washington resorted to violence, repeatedly punching the vehicle window.
In a desperate attempt to escape, the victim accelerated to leave the area. During the escape, Washington began throwing rocks at the vehicle, ultimately shattering the taillight and causing additional damage to the vehicle's body.
Upon arrival of patrol units, the suspect fled into the woods near an adjacent hotel, initiating a search. Officers successfully located and apprehended Washington. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Washington has been lodged in the Atlantic County Justice Facility on charges including 1st Degree Carjacking, Weapons Offenses, and Criminal Mischief.
