SUMMARY:
On Thursday, February 8, 2024, at approximately 12:00 p.m., deputies from the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station responded to the Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree regarding a call for service. Soon after, deputies learned this call was in reference to a domestic disturbance.
Deputies contacted the female victim who reported she was in an argument with her boyfriend, Daniel Ammerman. The victim was driving with Ammerman and their 2-year-old child in the vehicle. Ammerman made several threats to kill her as she drove, when suddenly, Ammerman violently grabbed the steering wheel and intentionally jerked it allegedly trying to cause the victim to crash.
Ammerman's action and disregard for the victims caused the vehicle to lose control and skid head-on into oncoming traffic from the opposing lanes. The victim feared for both her and her child's life. Fortunately, they were not involved in a collision. Ammerman abandoned the victims in a hospital parking lot and fled the area in the vehicle.
Morongo Basin Station deputies overheard the broadcast of the incident, and swiftly located the vehicle near Twentynine Palms Highway and Mojave Ranch Road in Twentynine Palms. Deputies attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle and Ammerman failed to yield, reaching exorbitant speeds. During the 15-minute pursuit, Ammerman crashed the vehicle then fled on foot from deputies. After a brief foot pursuit, deputies took Ammerman into custody.
A records check of Ammerman revealed he was on active felony probation for CVC 2800.2, Felony Reckless Evading. Ammerman was once again arrested for this offense along with PC 273(A), Wilful Child Endangerment. Ammerman was booked into the Morongo Basin Jail.
