It is with great sadness that we confirm two of the deceased individuals in this incident are children and students of Sauk Trail Elementary School. On Sunday, February 18, 2024, at approximately 7:40pm, Middleton Police Officers were in the 6300 block of Maywood Avenue for a check property complaint unrelated to this incident. Minutes later, while officers were in the area, a male exited a separate residence in the 6300 block of Maywood Avenue stating he had been shot and he had multiple gunshot wounds. Officers immediately tended to the victim and began securing the area. The male was transported to a local hospital.
Additional resources were called to the scene including the Tactical Response Team (TRT) from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. Entry was made into the residence; three individuals were located and all three were deceased. The male who was assisted by officers is in stable condition.
This remains an active investigation. There is no known danger to the public. We are not looking for any additional individuals.
No further information on this incident is available at this time. Names of the deceased will be released by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office pending notification to next of kin.
The Middleton Police Department was assisted by numerous agencies including: Middleton EMS, Middleton Fire, Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Dane County Emergency Management, Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office, WI DOJ Crime Scene Response Unit, and investigators from the Fitchburg & Sun Prairie Police Departments.
