BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WATCH IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED 13:00 PST Sat Feb 24 2024 The Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center in Sandpoint has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WATCH for the following areas: ID 017 (Bonner County)...ID 021 (Boundary County)...ID 055(Kootenai County)...ID 079 (Shoshone County)
* WHAT...The avalanche danger for the warning area may rise to high by Sunday evening andthrough Monday.
* WHERE...Elevations above 5,000 in the St. Regis/Silver Valley area, Selkirk Range, West and East Cabinets and the Purcell Range of Northwest Montana
* WHEN...In effect from Sat 13:00 PST to Sun 13:00 PST.
* IMPACTS...Heavy snowfall and strong winds are predicted for Sunday through Sunday night at elevations above 4,000. Slabs of dense snow will form on top of a recently formed crust that will cause dangerous avalanche conditions in steep and mountainous terrain.
* PRECAUTIONARY / PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Very dangerous avalanche conditions. Travel in avalanche terrain is notrecommended. Avalanches may run long distances and can run into mature forests, valley floors, or flat terrain. Consult http://www.idahopanhandleavalanche.org/ or www.avalanche.org for more detailed information. Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage area of this or any avalanche center.
