February 28^th, 2024 Strong to Locally Damaging Winds
 
The following is an update from the Cranford Office of Emergency Management (OEM) as of 02/28/2024 @ 10:30AM:
 
The Township of Cranford and Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring strong to locally damaging winds projected to impact our region today through tonight, February 28^th, 2024.
 
CRANFORD’S LATEST FORECAST. 
 
MAIN HAZARD:  Strong to locally damaging winds.
 
Peak Winds:  45 to 50 MPH gusts are likely, mainly tonight.  Strong southerly winds today will become west this evening and then northwest later tonight behind the cold front.
 
Thunderstorms:  There will be isolated and embedded within heavier showers tonight.  These will help bring down higher winds with a low chance of damaging wind gusts.
 
Sub-Freezing Temperatures Late Tonight into Early Thursday AM:  Possible icy patches that develop where there are leftover puddles of water.  Potential impacts of slippery conditions for untreated surfaces.
 
Timing/Location:  The strongest wind speeds are expected immediately ahead of, and again in the wake of the cold frontal passage, between 7PM this evening and 3AM Thursday.
 
Impacts:  Strong winds will blow down scattered tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.  A few trees and power lines could be downed.  Power outages are possible.
 
Wind Advisory:  In effect for Northeast New Jersey 4PM this afternoon until 7AM Thursday. 
 
TOWNSHIP OF CRANFORD STORM PREPARATION
 
The Township’s Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services remain at a full complement of personnel, with police auxiliary remaining on standby in cases of downed trees, downed power lines, and road closures.  Residents should be aware that traditional road barricades will not be deployed during the wind gusts so not to create a windborne hazard. 

Cranford DPW is prepared to respond to reports of downed trees blocking township roadways.  Additionally, Cranford DPW will continue to monitor the road conditions in the early commuting hours in case of potential road surface freezing. 
 
WHAT CAN RESIDENTS DO IN ADVANCE OF AND DURING THIS WEATHER EVENT?

• Secure any objects on or near your property, including garbage cans or yard furniture.
• Charge cell phones and ensure that you anticipate the potential for power outages.
• Save a listing of utility companies to your cell phone ahead of needing repairs.
• Assume that any downed wires are live and dangerous, and contact the Cranford Police Communications Center at 908-272-2222 to report these hazards.
