The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office WARNS you of possible scammers! While scammers are getting very good in their attempts to get your personal information, you MUST stay vigilant. DO NOT give out any information over text, phone or email unless you have verified that the company you are communicating with is legitimate.
Recent reports have been made to the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office of callers claiming to be the IRS demanding payment for owed taxes. These individuals are allegedly impersonating local and federal law enforcement and threating arrest if bills are not satisfied right then.
According to the IRS website, “taxpayers will generally first receive several notices and letters from the IRS in the mail” before being contacted by phone or in person.
