The Mill Valley Police Department wants community members to be aware of a phone scam currently happening in and around Mill Valley.
The Mill Valley Police Department has received reports from community members that stated they received a call from a caller claiming to be a representative from either the Social Security Office and/or the DEA. The callers have been requesting personal information and money to be wired to solve some sort of "issue." The callers have threatened to send a police officer to the residence to collect money if they cannot get to the bank to complete the wire transfer.
The DEA and the Social Security Administration does not call community members seeking personal information or wire transfers of money. The Mill Valley Police Department does not collect money from individuals for outstanding traffic citations, warrants, claims of unpaid federal or state taxes, or any other monetary issue.
If you are a Mill Valley resident and a victim of these scammers with financial loss, you are encouraged to file a report by calling the Mill Valley Police Department's Non-Emergency line at (415) 389-4100.
We encourage you to check on your vulnerable loved ones who may have been receiving calls or requests.
Tips to help avoid becoming a victim of this scam include:
* Never give personal or financial information to an unsolicited caller or email.
* Be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment for any reason.
* Stay private. Regularly update privacy settings for social media sites. Scammers often make their stories more believable by trolling for personal information on Facebook, Twitter, and similar sites.
* Remember that anyone who has the number on a prepaid card has access to the funds on your card
* Never wire money, provide debit or credit card numbers to a stranger.
