Sheriff Richard J. Behnke reports that on 3-7-2024 at approximately 1854 hours deputies responded to the area of Cassopolis Road and Bullhand St. in Calvin Township, Cass County, for reports of a two-vehicle injury crash.
 
Investigation shows that driver Alyssa Handschu, 20-year-old Osceola, IN resident, was traveling northbound on Cassopolis Rd. when she struck a deer that was in the roadway. Another vehicle was traveling southbound on Cassopolis Rd when the impact of the first crash propelled the deer through the southbound vehicle’s windshield, causing a second crash. The second driver, Daniel Haskett, 67-year-old Elkhart, IN resident, then drove off the roadway were his vehicle came to rest. Alyssa Handschu sustained no injuries from the crash. Daniel Haskett was pronounced deceased on scene from injuries sustained in the crash
 
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. All involved wore Seatbelts. This crash remains under investigation.
 
Assisting Cass County Sheriff's Office on scene was Ontwa Township Edwardsburg Police, Michigan State Police, Porter Township Fire Department, and SEPSA EMS.
