Felon Found to be in Possession of a Firearm After Shooting Himself in the Hand

LOCATION: 8200 Block of Vineyard Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga, CA, 91730
SUSPECT(S): Devauntae Lee Scroggins, Age 28, Resident of Rancho Cucamonga
SUMMARY: On Monday, March 11, 2024, at approximately 9:53 P.M., Rancho Cucamonga deputies responded to a call for service regarding shots heard at an apartment in the 8200 block of Vineyard Avenue. The reporting party heard gun shots and an unknown male yelling.
Deputies arrived on scene and contacted Devauntae Lee Scroggins, who had a single gunshot wound to his left hand. During a security check of the residence, deputies located blood spatter and a handgun. Through investigation, it was determined Scroggins shot himself in the hand. Scroggins is a convicted felon and was recently sentenced to felony probation stemming from a February 19, 2024 incident, where he set fire to a vehicle and assaulted a deputy sheriff – case number FWV24000635. Additionally, Scroggins was sentenced in January 2024, to a term of 28-days in county jail for assaulting a police officer – case number MWV24000917.
Scroggins was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was later booked into the West Valley Detention Center on charges of PC246.3(a), PC29800(a)(1), and PC30305(a)(1) with bail set at $30,000. Scroggins also faces an additional charge of PC1203.2(a) – Probation Violation which was set as a no bail hold. Scroggins’s next scheduled court date is March 14, 2024, in the Rancho Cucamonga Superior Court.
