St. Patrick’s Day Safety:
As we approach St. Patrick’s Day, traditionally one of the heaviest drinking days of the year, we want to remind everyone to celebrate responsibly.
The South Brunswick Police Department will have extra DWI patrols on the road throughout the entire weekend. These patrols will be diligently looking for drivers who are under the influence in an attempt to keep the roadways safe for everyone.
Here are some tips to help you safely navigate the festivities this year.
Have a plan for getting home safely
If you’re going out to a bar or party, ensure everyone in your group has a safe means of returning home. Whether you’re driving or just crossing the street on foot, keep your awareness levels high.
- Never drive while under the influence of alcohol or other substances
- Use extra caution as a pedestrian if you choose to walk home — walking while under the influence can be dangerous
- Utilize public transportation or a designated driver
Use the buddy system
Plan ahead by taking a trusted friend who has your best interests in mind. Stay together! Look out for the safety of your friends and talk to them about doing the same for you.
Eat and stay hydrated
Make sure you eat well and stay hydrated. It also helps to alternate a non-alcoholic beverage, such as water, with any alcoholic drinks you consume.
Don’t leave your drinks unattended
Even if you are not drinking alcohol, it is easy for someone to put something in your drink unless you see it opened or prepared. Keep your drink with you at all times.
Know the signs of an alcohol emergency
If you notice a person who is unconscious or semi-conscious, has a pale or bluish color to their skin or is breathing irregularly, call 911 immediately. Never assume that a person will sleep it off.
By following the tips above, you can help make your celebration more fun and safe for everyone.
