Narrative: |
Two suspects were arrested in Moorpark for identity theft and theft by false pretenses charges, involving victims in Texas, South Dakota, and Florida.
On March 5, 2024, a Texas resident contacted the Moorpark Investigations Bureau concerning their elderly mother being a victim of a scam. After falling victim to the scam, the elderly victim mailed a significant sum of US currency to an address in Moorpark, CA. Moorpark Detectives immediately responded to the address and learned the suspects were not associated with the location and had obtained the package as it was delivered. Video surveillance footage from nearby residences captured the suspect as he intercepted the package and fled the area in his vehicle.
On March 6, 2024, Moorpark Detectives received information that a package addressed to the same suspect as the day prior was scheduled to be delivered to an address in Chatsworth, CA. The scheduled delivery address was determined to be a vacant residence and the package delivery company contacted the package sender, who was determined to be an elderly victim of a scam. The package delivery company subsequently discovered a large sum of US currency in the package.
On March 7, 2024, Moorpark Detectives were notified of a suspicious package delivered in the 14000 block of Reedley Street, Moorpark. It was determined the package was sent from a third elderly victim from Florida and it contained a significant amount of US currency. Detectives and patrol deputies from the Moorpark Police Station remained in the area and subsequently arrested the two adult male suspects when they arrived to retrieve the package.
The suspects were arrested for violations of PC 487 – Grand theft, PC 182(a)(1) – Conspiracy to commit a crime, PC 532 – Theft by false pretenses, PC 368(d) – Identity theft from elder or dependent adult, and PC 466 – Possession of burglary tools. The suspects were booked into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility in Ventura and are pending a future court appearance.
The Moorpark Investigations Bureau would like to remind members of the public to be cautious when providing information online or over the telephone that could give scammers access to computers and confidential information. Legitimate banking, public utility, and business organizations will never ask you to send cash or gift cards as a means of payment. If you receive a request to make a payment by sending cash or gift cards, please call Sheriff’s Dispatch at (805)654-9511 to report it.
