Incident: Two Unrelated DUI Collisions, One with Significant Injury

On Saturday, March 16, 2024, at approximately 10:54 p.m., personnel from the Petaluma Police Department along with the Petaluma Fire Department were dispatched to the 200 block of Petaluma Blvd N on report of a collision involving a vehicle and a motorcyclist. Initial reports by citizens indicated the motorcyclist possibly suffered a broken leg as a result of the collision.
Upon arrival, officers learned an orange Dodge Charger traveling southbound on Petaluma Blvd N had collided into the rear of the motorcycle. The driver of the Dodge Charger was identified at the scene as Willy Mungai of Santa Rosa.
Upon contact by officers, Mungai displayed objective signs of alcohol intoxication and admitted to consuming alcoholic beverages. Officers conducted a DUI investigation and at the conclusion of the investigation determined Mungai was operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
Mungai was subsequently arrested for felony DUI (23153 CVC); driving under the influence and being involved in a collision causing injury. Mungai was later transported and booked into the Sonoma County Jail on the listed charge. The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
On Sunday, March 17, 2024, at approximately 12:11 a.m., personnel from the Petaluma Police Department along with the Petaluma Fire Department were dispatched to the intersection of S McDowell Blvd and Baywood Dr on report of a solo vehicle collision into the round-a-bout. Initial reports by a citizen indicated the driver fled the scene on foot.
Officers located the driver, hiding in a side yard of a residence a couple of blocks away from the scene of the collision. The driver was identified as Adolfo Gascon. Upon contact, Gascon displayed objective signs of alcohol intoxication. A DUI investigation was completed and Gascon was determined to have been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.
Gascon was subsequently arrested for DUI (23152 CVC) and later booked into custody at the Sonoma County Jail.
The Petaluma Police Department has been committed to increasing traffic safety, especially reducing the number of alcohol-related collisions. Petaluma Police advise motorist to plan ahead if you’re going to go out and drink alcohol, designate a sober driver or share a ride. Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
