Campbell Police Department Officer-Involved Shooting on Tuesday, March 19th

On March 19, 2024 at approximately 2:58 AM, Campbell Dispatch received a text-to-911 from a victim reporting a potential domestic violence incident. Officers responded to the reporting party’s residence located on the 1800 block of S. Bascom Avenue. Officers continued communication with the reporting party via text until she met officers outside the apartment and provided a statement as to what had occurred.

The reporting party’s two children and the suspect were still inside the residence while officers spoke with her outside. A records check of the suspect, identified as Miguel Agustin Nava Gomez, 31 years old of Campbell, revealed he was served a peaceful contact restraining order from the reporting party and had an outstanding warrant for domestic violence. Under these conditions Mr. Gomez was prohibited from possessing firearms and had none registered under his name.

At approximately 3:57 AM, Campbell officers initiated contact with the suspect at the apartment. Upon contact, the suspect disobeyed officer’s instructions and shot a firearm at officers. In response to the imminent threat, one Campbell Officer returned fire, striking the suspect. Immediate medical aid was administered by officers until the arrival of the Santa Clara County Fire Department, who continued life-saving efforts. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. The children were safely rescued and reunited with their mother.

“In the midst of a volatile situation, our officers remained steadfast in professionalism and bravery, putting their lives on the line to protect our community,” expressed Chief Gary Berg. “Their quick actions saved the children involved and averted potential harm to others, underscoring their dedication to prioritizing the safety and welfare of Campbell.”

The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office has joined the investigation and is working together with the Campbell Police Investigations Division, per the County Officer-Involved Incident Protocol. Their role is to co-manage the incident and ensure provisions of the protocol are followed. The Campbell Police Department remains committed to ensuring that a thorough and transparent investigation is conducted.
