Winter Weather Advisory until 01:00PM
...Impactful Snow Expected Across Parts of Iowa Today... .Snow will be on the increase early this morning over parts of central Iowa then will expand north to northeast through the morning hours. High snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour may occur over a 1 to 3 hour time window in some areas which would lead to travel conditions quickly deteriorating and becoming treacherous. There is the potential for a moderate to even a heavy band of snow to set up across parts of the area and thundersnow may occur. Currently the most favored area for a heavier band appears to be somewhere from the Boone to Ames to Marshalltown areas then northeastward towards Waterloo and Waverly. Will continue to monitor that situation. The winds will become gusty at times today with gusts up to around 35 mph. Blowing snow is not expected to be a big impact due to the heavy and wet nature of the snow. Warmer air will be arriving from south to north today and tonight. Therefore, the snow will transition to rain in central Iowa by noon but not prior to travel impacts having already occurred. Note that the Des Moines metro is on the southern edge of this system and impacts from south to north over the metro and Polk county may vary greatly. Stay tuned to continued updates on this impactful winter weather.
