On Wednesday, March 20, 2024 at approximately 1:29PM, the Gloucester Township Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) responded to a fight involving two students and two parents at Highland Regional High School. Additional officers responded to the school to assist. The School Resource Officer and multiple staff members quickly responded to the front vestibule of the school to separate the two juvenile females and two adult females who were actively fighting. The fight was contained in the vestibule and they had no access to the school interior or other students. As a result of the investigation, it was determined that both parents instigated the fight, when one of the juveniles suddenly assaulted the other. The parents of both juvenile students then got involved in the fight. During the incident, one of the parents, Brianne Mitchell, threw a small garden planter pot striking the Officer and the second adult female parent, Krystal Turner. Krystal Turner scratched the officer as he intervened to break up the fight, causing a minor injury. The fight was broken up by the SRO and staff prior to the arrival of additional officers.
The staff of Highland Regional High School and Gloucester Township Police Officers immediately implemented security procedures and quickly gained control of the scene without further incident. Both adults and one officer suffered minor injuries during the fight and were treated by EMS at the scene.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Gloucester Township Police Department's Juvenile and Family Services Bureau. Charges are pending against both juveniles who are not being identified. Brianne Mitchell was charged with Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer (4th Degree), Aggravated Assault (3rd Degree), and Simple Assault (Disorderly Persons Offense). Krystal Turner was charged with Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer (3rd Degree) and Disorderly Conduct (Petty Disorderly Persons Offense).
