Calaveras Marine Safety Rescue, Lake Camanche
On March 31st, 2024, a sudden shift in weather conditions at Lake Camanche prompted a rescue operation from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Marine Safety Division. At around 5:30 PM, the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office was alerted to a vessel stranded after its engine failed, leaving seven passengers, including a pregnant individual, stranded with insufficient safety equipment.
Initially, the day offered clear skies and mild weather, inviting boaters to the lake's waters. However, the calmness was abruptly disrupted as the weather took a turn, with conditions including heavy rainfall, hail, and high winds. These sudden changes resulted in 2-3 foot swells, complicating the stranded vessel's situation.
The Sheriff's Office dispatched a patrol vessel from the South Shore Marina, locating the distressed boaters along the shoreline. The deputies provided additional personal flotation devices (PFDs) and escorted the boat back to the North Shore Marina, ensuring everyone's safety.
Boater Safety Reminders:
Monitor Weather Conditions: Always stay updated on the weather, especially when on the water, as conditions can change rapidly.
Proper Safety Equipment: Ensure that your boat is equipped with enough PFDs for all passengers and that they are easily accessible.
Emergency Protocols: Be prepared for unexpected situations with a well-thought-out emergency plan.
Communication: Keep a reliable means of communication for emergencies and inform others of your boating itinerary.
Compliance: Understand and comply with all relevant boating regulations to promote safety for everyone on the water.
This situation serves as a stark reminder of the lake's changing conditions and the need for preparedness. The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office reiterates the call for all boaters to prioritize safety, ensuring a pleasant and secure experience on Lake Camanche.
